In this WordPress tutorial, I’ll teach you how a freelancer like you can make your own website. A lot of people shun the idea of building their own site—thinking it’s a costly investment…

But you can actually build your own site for only ₱4,898!

Should you even make a website? Well, if you want to make it easier to get more clients online, then yes!

There are a lot of different free options out there and I can only imagine how confused you might be right now. Wix, Squarespace, WordPress.com, Blogger—all these platforms suck!

Let’s focus on WordPress.com since it’s the most popular option above!

Just like the other platforms, WordPress.com has a free plan, but your site will be on an ugly subdomain (e.g. yoursite.wordpress.com).

Their paid plan will give you your own domain name but WordPress.com’s features are very limited. Also, $299 per year is pretty expensive!

See the infographic below by WPExplorer:

WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

The Advantages of a Self-Hosted WordPress.org Site

1. It’s 100% Free

You can download all the files you need to install self-hosted WordPress on WordPress.org for free. WordPress.org is an open-source platform where millions of developers across the globe can freely create themes and plugins for everyone’s use.

2. Literally Thousands of Plugins and Themes

You can install thousands of free WordPress themes and plugins that can make your site look and perform better—meaning you can get a faster, more responsive site that’s good for SEO. But if you want more powerful plugins and themes, there are paid ones as well!

3. A Large, Helpful Community

There are hundreds of online forums, blogs, and YouTube channels that can help you solve tiny to complex WordPress issues or even learn how to take WordPress customization one step further.

4. Gives Your Credibility and Authority a Big Boost

Using a free site can definitely hurt your credibility. Potential clients and businesses avoid people that might take advantage of them too… and having a free, cheap looking site might be a red flag to them. That’s why having your own domain name and a beautiful, powerful website can massively boost your credibility and authority!

5. Ownership

Lastly, running a self-hosted site gives you ownership. That means you eliminate the risks of a platform like WordPress.com or Blogger suddenly shutting your site down with all the content you’ve worked hard for. You can also place ads on your website and make some (or a lot) of income on the side!

If you want to work from home, learn how to start a blog, or sell products and services online, a self-hosted WordPress.org site is the best option for you!

The 4-Step WordPress Tutorial to Building Your Own Website for Only ₱4,898

A few years back, I spent months learning about WordPress.org and the advantages of a self-hosted site before actually starting. I was hesitant because I was thinking too much of the cost of building my own site…

Who’s even happy spending a few thousand pesos?

No one, right? But you need to think of your website as an investment, not an expense…

Building my own website early was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my freelance copywriting career. It helped me get more clients and charge higher rates and I’ll teach you how to create your own money-making website in this WordPress tutorial.

Well, honestly, you can still succeed even without a site—just a portfolio and your LinkedIn profile—but think of having your own site as a “hack” that will speed up your growth.

Definitely worked for me… and it’ll work for you as well!

Once your website brings a consistent flow of clients, all you’ll need to worry about is how to spot and filter out bad clients! Does this sound good?

Now, let’s get started with the WordPress tutorial…

Here’s what you need to build your own website:

  1. Domain name
  2. Web hosting
  3. A credit/debit card and/or a PayPal account

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through step by step until you finally have a site with WordPress installed. Enjoy!

Step 1: Buy a Domain Name on GoDaddy

Cost: ₱788 (2 years)

Accepted Payment Methods: Credit/Debit card and PayPal

GoDaddy Website: https://ph.godaddy.com/

The first step in this easy-to-follow WordPress tutorial is to buy a domain name on GoDaddy’s website.

GoDaddy is the safest place to buy domain names and their prices are affordable.

But what exactly is a domain name?

A domain name is simply your website name. Users access your website by typing in your domain name in their browser.

I highly recommend you choose a “.com” domain.

Other extensions (e.g. .info, .net, .asia, .guru) will just confuse users and are not better even if they’re more expensive. If you’re targeting the Philippine market, you can choose a “.ph” or “.com.ph” domain, but these are more expensive.

If you can’t think of a good domain name, try using your full name. It’s unique, professional, and you can build your brand around it.

GoDaddy Domain Name

A domain name costs around ₱739 per year on GoDaddy. But if you buy a domain name for at least 2 years, you get the first year for around ₱49 only. That means you only pay ₱788 for 2 years! Great deal, right?

When I bought my domain name, I picked copybyraffy.com because I find it catchy and easy to remember.

Tip: Don’t buy anything else from GoDaddy. They will offer you a ton of upsells that you DON’T need.

Step 2: Buy a Web Hosting Plan on InMotion Hosting

Cost: ₱4,110 (1 year, Launch Plan @ $6.99 per month)

Accepted Payment Methods: Credit/Debit Card

InMotion Hosting Website: http://www.inmotionhosting.com/business-hosting

The next step in this WordPress tutorial is buying a web hosting plan. A lot of people are claiming that BlueHost is the best web hosting service provider out there…

Truth be told, BlueHost sucks big time!

The only reason why a lot of people promote BlueHost is because they’re affiliates of BlueHost. They earn money every time someone signs up with their link.

I’m not an affiliate of InMotion Hosting but I highly recommend their web hosting services. I commend them for their superior customer service and insanely high uptime. They have very affordable plans too!

I’ve been with InMotion Hosting for more than 3 years now. I’ve tried others but nothing compares to their service and support!

So if you want reliable web hosting with superior customer service at a good price, InMotion Hosting is for you!

Simply go to InMotion Hosting’s pricing page and choose a plan. The lowest-priced plan will be enough, you can even host two domain names in this plan. This plan costs $5.99 per month (2 years) and $6.99 per month (1 year). One time payment, of course.

Okay, now that you have both domain name and web hosting… the spending stops. (Yay!) It’s now time to connect the two and install WordPress on your site.

Step 3: Point Your Domain Name to InMotion Hosting’s Server

Next, we need to point your domain name to your web hosting service provider’s DNS server. Your domain name and web hosting need to be connected so users can access your site. You must go through this step if you don’t your site won’t work.

By the way, InMotion Hosting has a live chat support feature. If you get stuck somewhere, you can contact one of their agents and they’ll happily help you out.

Here’s how to point the domain to InMotion Hosting’s DNS server…

1. Log into your GoDaddy account.

GoDaddy Account Login

2. Click the “DNS” button on the domain you want to manage.

*If you don’t see this, click on the “Manage” button, scroll down, and click on the “Manage DNS” link.

3. On the Nameservers section, click on the “Change” button.

4. Choose “Custom” in the drop-down menu and under Nameservers fill in InMotion Hosting’s Nameserver information.

  • ns1.inmotionhosting.com
  • ns2.inmotionhosting.com

5. Click “Save” and done!

Congratulations! One last step and you’ve got a self-hosted WordPress site already.

Step 4: Install WordPress Using Softaculous

WordPress.org is 100% free, as I’ve mentioned above. You can choose to manually download the files and install them, but the easier option is to install WordPress using the built-in Softaculous that comes with your InMotion Hosting account.

1. Log into your AMP (Account Management Panel).

If you don’t know how to get there, simply click on this link.

2. Scroll down and click on “cPanel”.

3. Scroll down and look for the Software section. Under that, click on “Softaculous Apps Installer”.

6. Fill in the required WordPress setup information.

7. Click on “Install” and wait for WordPress to finish installing.

8. Congrats! WordPress is now installed!

To login to your WordPress admin dashboard, simply go to “yourdomain.com/wp-admin” and you should get a login screen like this:
WordPress Account Login
Inside your admin dashboard, you will see different tabs where you can create blog posts (Posts), website pages (Pages), install themes (Appearance > Themes), download and install plugins (Plugins), and so much more.

The next step?

Start writing your website’s copy and think about the best theme to use. You can simply pick a free theme or buy a premium theme that will make your site look more professional and perform better!

So how much did we spend to make a WordPress site?

Domain name from GoDaddy: ₱788 (2 years)

Web hosting from InMotionHosting: ₱4,110 (1 year, Launch Plan @ $6.99 per month)

Total Cost to Build Your Own WordPress Site: ₱4,898

The best part is that you can win back your ₱4,898 in less than a month of freelancing or doing business online.

Once you get your investment back, everything you earn after that will be pure profit from a site that took you 30 minutes to setup (and, well, maybe a few days to design).

Imagine how fast you can scale your business—most importantly, your income!

While a lot of people surely have succeeded in the online freelancing (and business) world without a website, your road to success will be less bumpy with your own site.

Learning a lot from this WordPress tutorial so far?

We’re not yet done though… Let’s talk about how you can stand out from the competition by building a beautiful, highly customized, and professional-looking site without hiring a developer…

Divi: The Most Powerful Drag-and-Drop WordPress Theme

According to Canva‘s study, having a beautifully designed website help you get more clients. If you have a bare, cheap-looking site, clients may doubt your credibility and expertise. After all, first impressions last!

In this WordPress tutorial, I’ll also be sharing with you my favorite premium WordPress theme…

Okay, so my favorite WordPress theme—and I’ve tried a lot of different themes—is the Divi theme by Elegant Themes. Divi is Elegant Themes’ most powerful premium WordPress theme.

I simply love Divi. I’ve been using it for years now for both of my sites and I can tell you, it’s really powerful.

If you hear people saying you can’t build a beautiful, highly customized, and responsive site without a developer, they most likely don’t know about the Divi theme!

(Or they might want you to hire them if they build sites…)

Here are a few reasons why I love the Divi theme:

1. You can easily build your website visually

Divi Theme

Divi is powered by the Divi Builder, an insanely fast and incredibly intuitive front-end editor that makes it the best drag-and-drop site builder for WordPress. Divi makes it so easy for people who don’t know how to code and build their site from scratch. You don’t even have to know anything about HTML, CSS, Javascript, or the like!

2. Each element is fully customizable

Divi Theme

Don’t want your site to look like other sites? After all, it sucks if your design looks like or is actually a template. With Divi, you can change fonts, colors, sizing, spacing, and more!

3. There are more than 40 elements to use

Divi Theme

Divi has a lot of elements you can drag-and-drop across your site. Need a button? How about an email opt-in form? A portfolio grid? Or maybe some social media buttons? Divi has it all!

4. Your site will be insanely fast and responsive

Divi Theme

Every web designer knows that slow, unresponsive sites make people leave the site in less than 5 seconds. With Divi, your site will be insanely fast and responsive. Making it great for SEO too!

Check out these websites that use the Divi theme!

5. Copywriting Dojo (work in progress!)

Copywriting Dojo

Amazing, right? That’s why I highly recommend this WordPress theme to freelancers, bloggers, and entrepreneurs. I’m a HUGE fan!

It looks awesome, but wait… How much is it?

If you go searching for other premium WordPress themes—though I doubt you’ll find a better one—most of them charge $200+ (around ₱10,000) per year.

“Two hundred freakin’ dollars? I can’t afford that…”

Well, good thing you found this WordPress tutorial! Lucky you!

Elegant Themes charges way, way lower than that. See Elegant Themes’ membership pricing below:

Elegant Themes Membership

I got the Lifetime Access package because I’ll be using this theme forever. I’m also offering simple site building using Divi to clients as an added service. Additionally, I can easily create a site (maybe a media site, business site, etc.) since I no longer have to worry about buying a theme.

Here’s what’s included if you sign up for an Elegant Themes membership:

  1. Divi Theme
  2. Divi Builder (for any theme)
  3. Extra Theme (a powerful Divi-like theme for bloggers/media sites!)
  4. Bloom Plugin (awesome email opt-in plugin!)
  5. Monarch Plugin (kickass social sharing plugin!)
  6. 88+ more themes you can use!
  7. License to use all themes and plugins in an unlimited number of sites
  8. Rockstar customer support (trust me, they’re developers are awesome!)
